The TFSA is almost always worth filling: tax-free growth, tax-free withdrawal, no strings. The RRSP earns its keep when you’re deducting at a high rate today and expect a lower one in retirement — but it needs salary to create room, which loops back into your compensation planning. The corporation is the owner’s superpower and trap at once: investing dollars that only paid ~12% tax is a massive head start, but the passive income grind and the eventual tax on withdrawal mean it needs managing, not just accumulating. Most owners should run all three, in a deliberate order — not whichever one their bank mentioned last.

Employees get this question with two options. Owners get it with three — and the third one changes the whole conversation, because the corporation can invest dollars that have only been taxed at the small business rate. That head start is real. So are the strings attached.

Here’s the comparison, run the way we run it with clients every fall.

The TFSA: fill it first, almost always

The TFSA is the simplest win in Canadian planning: contributions come from after-tax money, but growth and withdrawals are completely tax-free, forever, with no effect on anything else — no clawbacks, no income inclusion, full re-contribution room the January after a withdrawal.

For an owner, the TFSA has one more quiet virtue: it’s the bucket that’s truly outside the business. Corporations carry risk; RRSP withdrawals are taxable at whatever your future holds; the TFSA is clean, liquid, and yours. The only real argument against filling it is not having the after-tax cash — and even then, it’s usually the last bucket to sacrifice, not the first.

New room arrives every January 1, and room from every year since 2009 carries forward if you’ve never contributed. Most owners we meet have five figures of unused room and no plan for it. Start there.

The RRSP: a bracket arbitrage machine — if you feed it salary

The RRSP’s value is the spread between your tax rate now and your tax rate when you withdraw. Deduct at a 48% bracket today, withdraw at 30% in retirement, and the RRSP paid you 18 points plus decades of tax-deferred compounding. Deduct at 25% today and withdraw at 30% later, and it worked against you.

For owners there’s a structural catch we covered in the salary-versus-dividends post: RRSP room is built from salary, not dividends — 18% of earned income up to the annual cap. A dividend-only owner builds zero room. So the RRSP decision isn’t separate from the compensation decision; it IS the compensation decision. If the RRSP fits your bracket math, your fall planning should include enough salary to generate the room — and that’s a December payroll decision, not a February one, even though the contribution itself can wait until 60 days into the new year.

When the RRSP shines for owners: high-income years (deduct at the top), income smoothing (contribute in fat years, withdraw in lean ones), and the spousal RRSP for retirement income splitting before 65.

The corporation: the biggest bucket, with the most plumbing

Here’s the owner’s edge. A dollar of business profit keeps roughly 88 cents inside the corporation after small business tax. Pay it out to invest personally and you might keep 55 to 65 cents first. Investing 88-cent dollars instead of 60-cent dollars is a head start no personal account can match — it’s the deferral engine we described in the health professionals post, and it applies to every incorporated owner.

The plumbing that comes with it:

The passive income grind. Once investment income inside the corporate group passes $50,000 a year, your $500,000 small business deduction limit starts shrinking. A corporate portfolio big enough to matter eventually creates exactly this problem — a good problem, but one that needs annual watching and sometimes restructuring.

No preferential treatment inside. Corporate investment income is taxed at high rates upfront (partly refundable when dividends are paid). The corporation defers tax on the capital you invested; it doesn’t shelter the returns the way a TFSA does.

The exit is taxable. Corporate savings come out as dividends someday, taxed then. The plan needs a drawdown strategy, not just an accumulation habit.

It’s exposed. Corporate investments sit behind corporate risk unless they’ve been moved to a holding company — the structure conversation from our holdco post.

The corporation wins when the alternative was paying top personal rates just to move money into a personal account. It underperforms for owners who end up spending the “investments” anyway (see: shareholder loans), or who let a growing portfolio silently grind their operating company’s tax rate.

The order that usually works

Every situation differs — that’s not a disclaimer, it’s the planning work — but the pattern that fits most established owners:

TFSA every year, funded from whatever you’re already paying yourself.

RRSP when the bracket math says yes, with salary set deliberately to create the room.

Everything beyond that compounds corporately, ideally in a holdco, with the passive income line monitored annually.

Debt and lifestyle balance the whole thing — paying down a 7% operating line is a guaranteed return no bucket matches.

And a timing note while it’s November: TFSA top-ups, the salary decisions that create RRSP room, and the dividend planning that funds all of it are December moves. The buckets don’t care when you fill them. The tax year does.

Frequently asked questions

Should I skip the RRSP entirely and just invest in my corporation?
It’s a legitimate strategy some advisors favour — the corporate deferral is powerful, and it avoids locking money behind RRSP withdrawal tax. But it leans entirely on discipline (the money must stay invested) and accepts the passive income grind. For most owners, a blend beats either extreme: the RRSP captures high-bracket deductions in strong years, the corporation takes the overflow.

I’ve paid myself only dividends for years. Is the RRSP door closed?
Not closed — just not yet built. Dividends create no room, so your room is whatever remains from old salary years. If RRSP deductions fit your picture, future salary can start building room again; that’s a compensation-mix change to plan before year-end, not after.

What about the math of all this — paying down my mortgage or line of credit instead?
Debt repayment is a guaranteed, tax-free return at your interest rate. Against a 7% operating line, very little beats it; against a 4% mortgage, filling a TFSA is usually competitive and keeps flexibility. Run it as a fourth bucket, not an afterthought.

Does corporate investing affect my small business deduction?
Once passive investment income across the associated group exceeds $50,000 in a year, yes — the $500,000 limit shrinks by $5 for every $1 above the threshold, gone entirely at $150,000. It’s the main reason a growing corporate portfolio needs annual planning attention, not autopilot.

Where does the Individual Pension Plan fit?
An IPP is essentially a supercharged, corporately-funded RRSP for owners typically 40+ with years of high T4 income — larger deductible contributions than RRSP limits allow, at the cost of complexity and commitment. Worth modelling once salary history and age line up; your advisor can tell you in one meeting whether you’re a candidate.

The three-bucket decision is exactly the kind of thing that goes wrong when the banker, the bookkeeper, and the tax preparer each see one piece. YBL runs it as one conversation — compensation, corporate tax, and the savings order, settled together before year-end. December is when the moves happen; November is when to book the chat.

","

RRSP, TFSA, or Leave It in the Corporation?
